Because while liberals have a vague, uselessly imprecise understanding of what some unimportant words mean, like liberal and socialist, the conservative base holds knowing things in active contempt and the leadership likes to keep them that way.

Their entire echo chamber is paid to say that over and over and over so it just becomes reality to them. I explained to a coworker that basically anyone that even slightly understands Marxism hears the right say that nonsense and it sounds like if I were to say “Donald Trump is a vegan organic farmer.”

It’s the same category as “woke” like this book:

I looked it up and see, “Marxism is an economic and political theory that examines the flaws inherent in capitalism. It’s primarily based on the work of German philosopher and economist Karl Marx. 1. Marxist theories were influential in the development of socialism, which advocates for the shared ownership of the means of production by workers”

… That sounds like it aligns with how I see it. I like to examine the flaws in capitalism and I don’t think that we, as a group, are benefitting from once CEO per company making an ass load of money via greed. Am I Marxist or no?

Don’t confuse “post-Marxist understanding” with “being a Marxist.”

Marx defined and described an ontology that even his opponents use as tools to describe the economy - but it wouldn’t make sense to call opponents of Marx as ‘Marxists’ would it?

Just examining flaws in and of itself isn’t socialism, although arguably saying capitalism has no flaws is pro-capitalist.

Instead of checking a dictionary, do you want to ask actual Marixists what they think of the Democratic Party? You can find plenty of them around here. They tend not to have anything nice to say about the Democrats, and would be insulted at the comparison.

You have to pass the right gatekeepers to be Marxist because if there’s one thing Marxists don’t want is people on their side who don’t necessarily agree with 100% of every economic idea from one dude a century ago… Apparently

It’s because it’s very reductive and weird to look at this one-line definition and ask if you’re a Marxist. You’re not automatically Christian just because you like giving to the poor and you saw on Wikipedia that Christianity gives to the poor, there’s a lot more to it. You’re a Marxist if you look up Marx’s theory and decide you agree with all (maybe most) of it. There’s a spectrum greater than not liking CEOs making money before asking if you’re a Marxist, a Communist, or just a Libertarian.

Don’t let that stop you if you want to learn more about it to see if you still like it.

Or maybe when you reach $1B we take away all your money, maybe name a park after you, and put a little gold star on your ID and license plate so everyone can know you’re on New Game+ and are super good at capitalism. Then they can show everyone how it’s done by pulling themselves up by their bootstraps and proving they got rich through hard work and talent rather than luck and exploitation.

I honestly believe someone could run as a Republican on the whole “it was better back then” train utilizing most of the Republican official platforms from the 1960-1970s. It’s pretty damned close to the basics the Dems have been talking about and not accomplishing because of obstructionism.

It’s clear with modern Rs you don’t even need to explain anything, just say you’re going back to the good old days when the US was powerful, etc. and hijack the current bullshit machine. Then push through the actual platform of the time, with receipts. Force them to face the fact their party has been hijacked.

I have spoken to a voter of Trump who formerly was in my circle. I honestly asked her what the reason was. Her answer?

“I just don’t like the other party.”

That was it. Now I imagine besides the obvious cultists, that people treated the general elections like as if we’re voting on two sports teams, that people had that same exact reason. “Oh I just don’t like that other party” all while having the blankest of stares, the breeze between their ears and the stoic walk of automated activity as they confidently and blindly voted for the wrong party.

People are primarily driven by emotion. Some people almost exclusively so.

You can’t really convince people of things with facts and figures. That’s like trying to heat your bedroom by making a bonfire down the street.

We’re all emotional, and all of us sometimes follow our feelings over more rational motivations. But a lot of people are pretty much all emotion, and they vote for bad policy.

I think it’s important to recognize none of us are immune to emotion. We’re not Vulcans. Some people are a little better about keeping them in balance, but even that depends on factors like “did you get enough sleep?” and “do you feel secure and safe?”

If you stress anyone out long enough they’re going to become more emotional driven and less coolly rational.

Even Vulcans can be emotional depending upon their health and other circumstances. Vulcans still have emotions, they’ve simply learned to keep them in check (pretty effectively most of the time).

The human race can do this too, but we’re nowhere near ready.
