  • Program it in increments?

My house has a lot of thermal mass. In the morning when the temperature comes up, it tends to overshoot and make the air temperature too hot after working hard to heat all that thermal mass. However I found it much more comfortable to add an increment: half an hour at a degree colder than I want. Now it can heat all that thermal mass while overheating the air is just playing into my hands

Who says it isn’t causing problems? We had a similar issue with my oldest. He is a brilliant kid who can’t get his shit together because of his disability. However he can skate through school.

It was a constant battle to get him services and accommodations, because he “is not failing”. The school system thinks he doesn’t need treatment because he’s not failing. We think he deserves treatment because he isn’t living up to his abilities and struggles to do basic stuff

  • One has a potential villain above the law and a moral purpose in removing him, or is at least a sympathetic figure striking out at one of the many causes of our misery, and who we can applaud. There is a root cause in desperate need of fixing but corporate voices in search of profit who are somehow more important than people’s lives

The other is threatening people’s lives and health by contaminating food, and dismissing as a “prank” for clicks. He needs plenty of time in jail and to forfeit whatever cash those clicks might bring. There is no morality play, no political difference, only exploiting the worst of humanity for cash

I had an interview with a “mass email” provider. By the time I left it was clear to both of us that no way in hell.

Is it bad that I consider this much worse than a defense company? Lockheed has some cool tech and help protect my country, at the huge cost of killing so many. Cambridge Analytica indiscriminately attacks people’s privacy, all people, and for profit with no hint at a good purpose

I’m sure it must bring you hope to see how we all pulled together to fight the pandemic, to accept all people regardless of preferences skin color, religion or disabilities, our investments into a future of high speed rail and other upgraded infrastructure, renewable energy, clean air, removing plastic from everywhere, and in mitigating and even reversing our damage to the climate *

    * may not be as obviously sarcastic outside the US

    Edit: backslash. Thanks @Gutek8134@lemmy.world

  • Does not help if no one enforces it. About 10 years back we were on vacation and had to rush our little one to the ER. Since it was a breathing issue and the waiting room was crowded, they suggested we wait outside. Sure enough, then we had to get away from the smokers congregating near the “No smoking on hospital grounds” sign.

Of course the personnel weren’t interested in helping to clear that, and we decided people waiting at the ER were already under enough stress

Seriously, I was going to add my WiFi6e is theoretically way overkill for my limited usage and that’s supported by speed tests, yet I do notice its limitations while gaming. It’s got the bandwidth, it’s even got the low latency, but it also has the glitches. Until that speed is reliable enough to never impact my games, it’s not worth being my first choice

Even then, wired is better where appropriate because it just works. The more devices I can put on Ethernet, the fewer require the extra setup of wifi, the extra risks to eavesdropping and single points of failure, and yes the fewer where I ever have the frustration of glitches

But how do they know you don’t need the qualification? I’m sure the people who know you could say, but what makes you qualified to a stranger?

It’s the same problem as standardized testing for school. Everyone seems u to understand it’s a bad idea except that you need something

Of course we all give feedback to recruiters, and typically ask for a new pile with the adjusted criteria. There’s even been times when we asked for everything, no filters, but we can’t afford to have technical people tied up going through piles of resumes

I do believe it’s tougher than it looks. Recruiters need to understand the field to know what to look for, and understand enough about what the company is looking for but they just don’t.

Earlier in my career it seemed like there were specialist recruiters who could do that: find the right people to place with the right company. However now it seems to have degenerated into salesmanship and quantity over quality. Or I don’t know if I’m just earlier in the process now, helping to identify who is worth interviewing, rather than just being another interviewer

  • if you do it deliberately it’s no different to any other weapon.

Of course but at least there’s the possibility of it being an accident. Absent other proof, such as that possession of a manifesto, you can quite possibly get away with it

On the other hand there’s no way to spin as an accident that you walked up behind someone and shot them

So, what do you do? The problem is it’s also difficult from the hiring side. Every opening has dozens to hundreds of applicants, most of whom are not qualified. No one can keep up with that, and recruiters/hr are horrible at it. Automation sucks, but it’s the quickest, easiest, fairest way to identify a smaller group that you hope are the ones who are qualified

We can put someone like an intern at the top of the pile because we know them, officially.
