  • Agreed. A more granular map would be interesting to see. I mean, something like 65% of NY state’s population live in the NYC metro, which is a tiny part of a deceptively large state.

Re: Colorado, it’s just a relatively healthy state with a general ethos of living well. I think you’re seeing some of the urban effect through the Denver, Colorado Springs, etc. and the addition of rural areas of Colorado still having an outdoorsy culture, as well as (often) affluent rather than “rural poor.” Colorado has one of the lowest rural poverty rates in the United States.

And since Colorado would be in the 25-29.9 category now, it’s comparable to many states that also have comparable rural poverty rates. The fact that the states with the highest rural poverty also have the highest weights makes me assume obesity rates and poverty rates heavily overlap.

Edit: to the point, look at the county map for childhood obesity. You can literally point out almost every major city in the United States.

  • Is it possible they’re expressing admiration or paying you a compliment and not trying to invoke your smirking condescension?

Incidentally, according to the most recent CDC numbers, Colorado is no longer “green” on this map, just Hawaii and DC.

There’s only eight states under 30%. West Virgina tops the numbers at 41%.

~75% of the United States is classified as overweight or obese, which is staggering. It has to be pretty unevenly distributed even within states, because I live in a college town in a low-middle-weight state, and very few appear obese, and I’m regularly in a nearby major metro, and I don’t see a ton of obese people there either. Rural children are 10-15 times more likely to obese, so I’m guessing that is probably a major factor as well.

25-35% obesity rates covers like 80% of states, so the US is just fat and getting fatter.

You can’t win em all. But, yes, I realize that. I didn’t put a ton of thought into it. In general, that’s fine. But right now, when our trans and non-binary friends and family are under siege and lives are at risk, I will try to be more thoughtful. I reserve the right to make jokes that land poorly and ill-timed sarcasm, but I’ll try to do it less often on topics that relate to people that have increasing fear for their lives and well being.

  • I agree, my apologies. I was just finding the post ugly and absurd, and I was flippant with my sarcasm, so I commented while I was walking without much thought.

But I agree with you. These are times to be clear and direct about being an ally. It’s reasonable and justified to be suspicious when the stakes are high and the world seems dark.

    Race isn’t biological.

Edit: I will leave the original comment, but as I realized after a conversation in this thread, unclear humor in dark times is in poor taste. I don’t support either sign, and I deeply want everyone to be able to freely express who they are and how they feel without discrimination or fear. Things are scary for our trans relations, and now is not the time to be unclear about one’s support. My apologies.

Thanks to @Incandemon@lemmy.ca for their understanding and generosity of spirit for taking the time to state what should have been obvious to me. Honest mistake yall.

  • While I’ve said no one is paying attention to you if you’re not peeing – and I think it’s largely true, I’ve never really noticed if someone doesn’t start peeing; I guess I would just assume they were stealth peeing against the side of the urinal – I have to admit I do notice those old guys that stand there for like five minutes leaking it out a spurt at a time. They seem to defy the 21 second rule.

  • No worries, I think a lot of people thought I was being an ass instead of honestly just having never thought about it. I wonder if it has something to do with growing up in a big family and playing sports and stuff. Like, I think I just became to desensitized to it. If I needed privacy to pee, I would probably wouldn’t have peed through all of high school and college lol.

The amount of time I’ve dumped a whizzer while someone was right next to me, talking to me, or once while two other people were in a tiny bathroom at a party… at bars where there was no urinal and no door on the stall… that last one was a pretty notorious bathroom, because like I said, the stall had no door, but also the door to the bathroom itself was a pair of those swinging doors like in wild west movies. I’ll admit having to take a shit while you could still see the people at the bar was pretty awkward. One of my favorite dive bars. 🤣
