  • Elsewhere I mentioned how Lemmy.ml is only the #5 instance, not #2. Here I’d like to add that even memes@lemmy.ml is not all that large.

For one, outside of that instance there are MANY meme communities rather than concentrating all into one giant megalithic community subject to whatever authoritarian mods are in charge there (ironically there is far more “sharing” outside of the “communist” instance than inside it:-P though the developers of Lemmy do share their codebase and that much deserves credit).

For another, take a look at the MAU - that stands for Monthly Active Users - and you’ll see its only <2/3rds the size of the largest community on Lemmy.World, plus there’s over a dozen additional communities that are larger than !memes@Lemmy.ml.

So yes, you’ll need to spend more time curating your experiences here than on Lemmy.ml or Reddit, like you’ll need to subscribe to multiple memes communities rather than just one. Hopefully you’ll continue to contribute by posting in one of those rather than the tankie one, and make & keep them all the more active as a result of your participation:-).

  • You can do whatever you want.

I suppose if you are saying that you will only ever do one or the other, then I would agree with you then that the link is the more valuable of the two.

Though personally I do feel that there is value also in showing the preview immediately without having to first click - like a Rick Roll scenario, the recipient doesn’t know yet whether they want to follow down that rabbit hole.

But I would most definitely not have used all this many words on my own initiative, I’m just trying to answer your question: personally, I choose to do both, in situations where it is not my OC but I want to share in the most appropriate manner possible. In an ideal world the software itself could show the image and the attribution both just by giving it the URL, but Lemmy it seems is not that advanced (although PieFed will do so, even for YouTube videos it shows them in an embedded player:-D, so there is hope for the future event if not much for today:-). And then for both I suppose the rules differ for posts vs. comments.

iirc Kansas allows abortions whereas Missouri does not? Missouri is also where Josh Harley is from. Kansas fluctuates back and forth between more conservative vs. liberal, whereas Missouri iirc is more solidly conservative.

I say this less to pick on any one place in particular, more to highlight how nuances can be pretty important to someone’s quality of life having to live in it.
