Some of the initial people involved did their university and post grad studies in the US, so they seem more American than Swiss to me and more chose Switzerland to conduct business after starting the company up after meeting at CERN.
His whole defense hinged on making people believe Gail Slater being on the FTC meant she fought for little tech, but omitted her history leaving to became vice-president for legal and regulatory policy for the Internet Association which is a lobbying group for companies like Google, Amazon, eBay, and Facebook.

It also provides little benefit to online publishers, and erodes trust between companies and their consumers.
That medium article that keeps being reposted from some random user with only that one article intentionally omits this work history after the FTC too.
Yeah I looked further into the article and it indeed does not seem to paint the entire picture. Especially with the omission that after leaving the FTC, Gail Slater became vice-president for legal and regulatory policy for the Internet Association which is a lobbying group for companies like Google, Amazon, eBay, and Facebook.
And The Internet Association had been covered by EFF before highlighting some things they didn’t agree with.

So medium article just glossing over who Gail started working for after leaving the FTC makes the omission a sign of incompetence or intentional with the knowledge it might weaken their argument. And who even is ovenplayer? We got no idea who this random person is so not covering the whole details makes me wonder why this medium article keeps being posted. Rather funny actually that the Trump tweet provided in the medium article omits this part too.
Rest of the world sees the US as a country that is getting closer to the Russians and alienating their former allies like Canada, Mexico, UK, and EU. So make of it what you will when it comes to whether endorsement of the US would be seen positively in other international markets Proton is trying to reach. There’s a growing blanket dislike of the US with no care for parties.
Protons best move is stopping with US centric topics which looking at their socials has been their main marketing focus. Focus on the fact that they are Switzerland instead of so desperately attaching themselves to the US in a world that is seeing more anti US sentiment grow. Which after their blunder with their CEO is not going to run well at all anyways being perceived as disingenuous by critics.
Let memory of US fade when it comes to Proton. That’s what I’d recommend to their marketing team.
Also got curious and looked more into Andy Yen, and he did schooling in the US going to Caltech and Harvard. It seems when it comes to Switzerland it was chosen as a place to start Proton, so unsure if he had ties to the country before hand. So I don’t think the whole he is some foreigner who is completely clueless about American politics can be used as an excuse, and certainly explains the very US centric approach of the company’s marketing. Background would suggests this is someone at the very least well aware of American politics and spent a significant time there immersed in the culture.
Protons biggest blunder of being able to pass it off as the opinions of one CEO was doubling down and going further into their thoughts on US politics from their Proton reddit account. Then editing and deleting comments when their attempts at damage control failed.
That’s the most interesting thing about all this. That they felt compelled enough to speak on it and then just dug themselves in further. And that’s their attempt at a palatable mainstream explanation. So it is intriguing wondering about what they actually believe.
At this point they’d be better off saying we don’t know anything about US politics we were out of our depth and trying to market ourselves to Americans saying things that we believed made us sound good. But in the end we are Switzerland based company not a US one.
Already well aware of the CDU and AFD. As long as nobody forms a coalition with the AFD not too bothered. Of course, if they do then it becomes a big problem.
Makes it harder to defend with the statement the official Proton account made on reddit which they have since then removed and kept editing. Makes you wonder what do they actually believe and if this is their attempt to be apolitical how much are they self censoring their true views on the matter to seem more palatable.
I haven’t fully committed to a new email yet to fully transfer over to, but I have been testing out tuta with it being one of the emails recommended by privacy guides. Still undecided though on what paid option to move to.

They haven’t left bluesky but they got backlash there too and have stopped being active for the past couple of weeks compared to on Twitter.
3·9 days agoThat’s a different matter though when it comes to ad block usage here, which you had presented as though this place has the same mainstream access of non ad block users as other platforms.
I’m just talking about ad block usage of fediverse compared to other sites.
Fediverse is said to be too confusing to use from redditors when reasons are given for why that haven’t joined, so this demographic of users likely skews much higher towards ad blocking with how niche the user base is.
WWII veterans died out and the next generation decided they want to be the Nazis for WWIII and are sieg heiling to their hearts content gearing the population for military special operations to begin.
Which is often advocated as a reason by conservatives who are absolutely delighted in dictatorship with their favorite God King, so have no reason to use it. It’s been the blue states who’ve advocated more strongly in favor of gun control.
Huge amounts of Americans support what Trump is doing and welcome a dictatorship. There’s no unanimous opposition to what Trump is doing. That is the reality. This is same as the Russia situation with Putin where Russians who sided against the country and fight alongside Ukraine are the minority actually willing to do something.
Bonus points if you talk like an old timer from the 1920s.
255·2 months agoThey are doing fantastic with electric car adoption too. Incredibly progressive in that area with other countries still stuck to their antiquated reliance on gas vehicles and still trying to prop up that industry.
Viewing through archive.is is another great option too for bypassing paywalls.
