I haven’t seen many references to Reason, and previous to this story I had not heard of them before. Most of the stories I am seeing are sourcing the mother. She seems to be doing a lot of interviews.

I never made claims regarding knowing the full story. Not sure anyone can know the full story until the other parties start talking. I was only responding to the claim that the story should be dismissed because of the source, and claims of what the sources motivations are.

I am supportive of reserving judgement for when more information comes out. I am just not supportive of jumping to the conclusion that because the linked article is from a questionable or biased source that it is automatically dismissed as fabrication and/or propaganda. Especially when there is so many organization who seem to be in defense of the mother.

As a middle aged father of two grown boys, one of the things I wish I had done better was encourage them to go out on their own more. Their mother would always be so worried, and knowing she has the best intention for them I would give in.

Also there was a couple of years when they were young I would try to force them to go outside and play, but they would quickly become bored and come back in the house. This was so frustrating at the time and then I realized that there were no other kids playing outside either. When I was growing up in the 80s and early 90s, I practically lived outside with my friends.

My boys are significantly more dependent on us, much less capable and their development seems stunted or slowed, which I am sure is partly due to the pandemic, but also due to the sheltering that has become normalized in our culture. Allowing this to happen is one of my biggest regrets as a father, which all things considered I guess isn’t that bad while keeping things in perspective.

I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that the abundance of information has a side effect of over protectiveness. This makes some sense as it would be evolutionarily beneficial to protect against potential threats, however media is tricking our brains to believe that these threats are both abundant and persistent.

Children need unsupervised freedom as part of their development, it allows them to learn how to navigate the world in a healthy regulated way, and how to deal with challenges, like problem solving or social interaction. The perception that the world is a dangerous place that children need constant protection from is flawed. If that were true, we would have never have survived as a species.

This is why you check the story against multiple sources. Just search “brittany patterson georgia” and you will find this has gone viral and there is tons of outrage over this.

This depends. A subpoena is only binding if the registrar is in a country that is legally liable. Some privacy focused registrars purposely locate themselves in countries that keep them legally insulated.

Capitalism or more accurately Neoliberalism is only successful due to competitive free markets, which encourages the ruthless pursuit of wealth extraction and resource acquisition.

It is not possible to succeed in “capitalism” without harming others, as you are required to extract the labor or value from those who are disadvantaged in order to enrich oneself. So in other words you convince the working class through persuasion to give you more than you give them.

This by definition is mental illness. Mental illness being thoughts or behaviors that harms oneself or others.

The fact that this isn’t widely accepted will be what we look back on as barbarism, much like we look back at history and wonder how those of the past could live such ways.

The most common way for a an employer to pay in cash is through a check mailed to your address on record. That check can then be cashed either by the bank on the check, which is required to exchange the check for cash or a check cashing business which will take a fee for the service. Both ways will require identification.

The only other legal way is get a job with an employer who is willing to pay in cash, usually at a cashier window. Most common in labor jobs in the mining, manufacturing or agricultural fields, some higher education institutions, and occasionally in construction.

The smarter version of a dumb idea is still a dumb idea. No one is advocating seriously for any of this because of the obvious flaws.

The smarter version of this idea is the turn signal comes on automatically in the direction you turn.

I was curious if what I had been told had any reference online, a quick search did turn up this post which pretty much says the same:

The arborists work for the power company, because even thought the utility poles are jointly owned the power company has the highest risk so they are responsible for management.

They will always remove the wood from power lines because wood is somewhat conductive, especially when it still fresh because of the water content. Leaving it on a high voltage line can increase the potential for a short. They don’t bother to cut them completely off the telecom lines because there is no risk of shock but a big risk to line damage. If they damage the telecom line they have to pay high fees to the telecom company for repair and risk creating an outage. Also the lines are designed to bear a certain amount of weight, as engineer have accounted for natural burdens like trees, ice and animals.

Also the wood eventually rots after a few seasons and will eventually fall off on its own.

Micay did not step down nor is it a symbolic gesture. He removed himself, at the demand of others within the organization, from any public relations duties he once held. He is an excellent and talented engineer and an absolutely horrible representative.

He has no people skills. He does continue to contribute and guides the project privately. It should have been done long ago because I think he has done a lot of damage by overreacting and fostering a community of toxicity by being a bad example.

Since his departure it has been improving and GrapheneOS is becoming mature and a far cry from the Copperhead days.
