  • For the most part, I just avoid topics I know will upset her, and I try to keep the conversation on topics I know she appreciates. It’s just peacekeeping at this point. I feel like I lost her long ago and all I can do is try to keep her happy now. It’s rough because I lost my father earlier this year and all I have left is my mother and sister, but they’re both deeply conservative people and shut down any topics they’re uncomfortable with instead of having open, honest discussion.

There are the occasional fights when I’m trying to relay something important and my mother won’t listen. Like the fact that I’m fully retired as of 38 years old, only because I’m a 100% disabled veteran will full medical/dental benefits for life. But Trump plans to eliminate the VA benefits program and privatize our hospitals. Which means I won’t be able to afford to live anymore and I’ll need to find a job. This severely affects my life, but my mom doesn’t believe it will happen and she doesn’t want to discuss it further. I basically need to become homeless and destitute before she’ll believe me, and even then she’ll probably have an excuse about how this is thanks to some obscure program Biden set up in the past.

Outside of my mother (and sister), though, I’m uncompromising. If I meet someone like my mother, I do my best to talk with them and have a meaningful conversation. If they won’t allow it, then I’m done with that person. I won’t keep people like that in my life; having to deal my mother is stressful enough.

You may ask why I keep my mother and sister in my life at all. The truth is, I grew up in a very loving, caring family and I’ve always gotten along with my family members well. I love them all and they love me too. I’m not going to let political discourse destroy my family, and I’ll still be here to help them when political decisions affect their lives. My sister even told me she’ll gladly take in my wife and I if we do end up homeless due to some policy change.

It’s just frustrating that I feel like I need to wear a mask in front of my mother and sister now. I’m not as open with them as I used to be and it eats away at me because I care for them so much.

  • My mother was one of the most intelligent people I know; she had a genius-level IQ and always seemed to know how to handle any situation with grace and efficiency. She was the breadwinner in our family, making much more than my dad and supporting our family well. She was my role model growing up, and thanks to her, I prefer strong, independent, intellectual women in my life.

In her old age though, she’s moved in next to her favorite brother whom she idolizes, a hero back in his day. (Firemen chief who’s always been aggressively involved in his community and can fix/build anything.) Unfortunately, he’s extremely pro-Trump and has convinced my mother that anything progressive is evil and “the way things used to be” is far superior to any “modern crap.”

My mother now argues vehemently against any programs that help her out in old age, she attacks progressive politicians and projects, and she immediately shuts down conversation if I mention anything about politics, even just stating neutral facts like “Trump won the presidency.” I just can’t get through to her anymore.

On top of that, she doesn’t handle controversy well anymore. My wife and I had one minor disagreement in front of her (not even raised voices, more or less an argument, just working through a misunderstanding) and she practically blew up at both of us, claiming we put her in an uncomfortable spot and she didn’t want to be stuck listening to us “fight.” Which prevented us from resolving our disagreement in a healthy manner and led to my wife and I having an actual fight later.

I’ve learned to be happy and cheerful around my mother and never bring anything decisive to her. Let her enjoy her final days in ignorant bliss. It hurts because I can’t be myself around her. I can’t have difficult discussions with her anymore and I can’t go to her with my own problems. She’s no longer the voice of logic and reason. There’s nothing wrong with her cognitively; she’s still all there in the head. She’s just so rooted in her conservative belief structure that she won’t accept me unless I’m the “perfect son.” And that sucks.

  • Whenever I get this, I open the settings for uBlock Origin (click the gear icon in the Firefox extension) and manually update everything in the filter lists. Just click the clock symbol at the end of each item and it’ll spin for a minute, then turn green.

After that, I completely refresh my YouTube page (Ctrl+F5 on PC; close tab and open a new tab on mobile) and it will load videos again.

Google and uBlock Origin are in an arms race, trying to one-up one another. Once you get a notice from YouTube, usually uBlock Origin has a fix for it within the day.

Tech notes for those interested: When you browse to a webpage, it stores a copy of the site on your PC, so if you go back to the site later or hit refresh on the page, it will load the local files instead of downloading the whole page from scratch again.

But if you want to force a website to load completely from scratch instead of grabbing recently cached files, hit Ctrl+F5. You need to do this to fully reload the YouTube page, it else you’ll just get the notice page again.

  • Millennial here. I tried to watch Seinfeld back in the day, and I thought it was kind of meh. But there was one character I really hated on the show. He had a whiny pathetic voice, was always complaining about something or another, and was just an awful actor, unlike the rest of the cast. I thought, if they just removed that one guy, the show would be great and I’d enjoy it so much more.

I found out later, that guy was Seinfeld. So… I never really got into the show.

  • Seems pretty straightforward to me. They want someone to run their Digital Development department. Overseeing the department in a managerial role, but they also want someone with technical skills so you actually know what’s going on and can effectively manage the personnel/job requirements, and communicate what it is your department does and plans to do to shareholders.

As far as the “technical skills” you need? Well… without knowing what this business is, I can’t further define that. Considering it’s a Digital Development department and they talk about “continuous improvement and embracing change and new technologies to drive our business forward,” it sounds like they’d be leaning on you to introduce new and innovative technologies to improve the way they do business.

That’s about all I can get out of that job ad without knowing the business or their technical requirements.

  • An anonymous third person is interviewing Red and the wolf separately. We’re bouncing between their two interviews, seeing both of their reactions to the same situation.

The interview is a way for the comic artist to tell this awkward version of the Red Riding Hood story without actually showing it.

The situation is about the wolf “eating grandma” (a euphemism for a sex act). Which is why Red is traumatized by walking in on them.

The wolf is probably being defensive, hence why he keeps asking the interviewer to “listen.” He’s trying to make his case as plainly and directly as he can and he wants the interviewer to pay attention.

I mean, Disney put out a casting call several years ago for little people to fill the dwarf roles for a live action Snow White. But Peter Dinklage balked at it, claiming that it was oppressive to cast little people just because they’re little and not giving them serious acting roles based on skill or merit.

However, a lot of little people in Hollywood got mad at Peter Dinklage for ruining job opportunities for them, because they’re rarely cast for anything else and they had no problem taking the roles based solely on their height.

But it was too late; Disney pulled the casting to avoid controversy and now we’re stuck with this CGI abomination to replace little people in this film.

It’s another name for fairy. They have all sorts of types and behaviors depending on the mythology they’re from. Some are tricksters who kidnap children from their homes and eat them or turn them into fairies, others are helpful forest or elemental sprites, some are demons, and some are changelings, taking the form of humans or animals whenever it suits them. As well as some other variations of fae depending on their origin.

One of the more common beliefs is that, if you give your name to a fae creature, they own your name and thus you, giving them complete control over your body. Which is why you never give out your name to a fae. They might march you off into the woods against your will and you’ll never be seen again.

Another common belief is that fae can’t touch iron, so it’s a good ward to keep them away. Hence Columbo never carrying a gun.

They’re magical creatures, so the fact that Columbo seems to always be where he’s needed or produce what he needs from his pockets seems almost like fairy magic.

I actually prefer Lemmy because my voice isn’t drowned out like on Reddit. Anything even remotely interesting already had 10K+ comments on Reddit by the time I found it, and my own little addition isn’t going to be noticed by anyone. But here on Lemmy, the most popular posts have like 20-30 comments, tops. I could add my 2 cents, three days later, and still get up/downvotes.

I’m more likely to reply and vote on posts and comments here because I feel like I’m contributing to a small-knit community, not just adding to a massive statistic. Reddit was more about consuming content. My pithy up/downvotes and comments over there hardly made a difference most of the time.

  • Oh my god! I used to read Sam & Fuzzy about 2 decades ago when I was a teenager! I didn’t realize the strip was still running. It got weird for a while and the main characters disappeared for about a year of strips, so I kind of lost interest. I wonder what’s happened in the last 20 years. It looks like it was rebooted about 15 years ago, and I don’t recognize any characters in recent strips.

  • I thought it was referring to “standup meetings,” which is what we called weekly meetings with the commander in the military.

Everyone stands for the commander when he enters a room, then each person presenting needs to be standing while briefing the commander.

It’s military protocol for a high-ranking officer, although the cool officers would tell everyone to buck protocol, remain seated, and just give them the bullet points so we can get back to work.

  • You could’ve saved a heckuva lot more money. I have two in my house as well, both were about $45 each and those were the luxury versions! My old ones were about $25.

They’re non-electric LUXE Bidet brand, activated solely by water pressure when you turn the dial on them. No fancy bells and whistles, but they have pretty decent water pressure and get the job done.
