Stop consuming more than you need. Maintain what you already own. Don’t buy it because it’s better than what you have, if what you have is already good enough. Buy second hand when you can. Lend and loan with friends when it comes to seldomly used tools.

Buy maintainable stuff instead of the cheap copy that has no repairability (Think of the boots theory and don’t get tricked into spending more in the long term just to spend less now).

And the hardest bit would be to stop comparing yourself and your life with that of those around you, I think that the rat race is the main driver of consumption together with all that wealth peacocking.

duckduckgo is one of the few search engines that doesn’t require javascript to function.
Removes all the fancy stuff and leaves you with search results and nothing else.

theguardian.com works just fine without allowing javascript to run at all, and don’t seem to load the trackers if you deny cookies. I did get a page popup where they pleaded but didn’t force me to subscribe if I allowed the optout domain to run javascript.

Now that we’re adding more dystopian books to the thread I’d like to shout out to Kallocain (1940) by Karin Boye. It’s more of a totalitarian state similar to 1984 but has an aspect of truth drugs, a hot topic back then, and thought criminalization.

I have a similar setup to @PieMePlenty@lemmy.world in regards to my home network and I wouldn’t dream of removing my wifi network. I still consider wired to be superior though it rarely matters at those latencies.

I’m only running a single eGPU + USB Controller passthrough and while it took some tinkering to get it started it has been smooth sailing afterwards. The B650 series of motherboards has mostly had good IOMMU groupings so there’s a good chance your motherboard will allow you to play around with some KVM/QEMU/VFIO if you wanna try gpu passthrough to a virtual machine.

Regarding Case: Generic I would look into getting one with dust protection (bottom and front) and preferably sound proofing. Having the dust get stuck outside the computer makes cleaning so much simpler and having a quiet computer is lovely.
Personally I’m a fan of the Fractal Design Define 7 but I imagine you can get a case with the dust protection and sound proofing much cheaper than that if you take the time to look around and read some reviews, especially if you don’t need E-ATX or multiple 3.5’’ disk slots.

Tables are something that’s just a given in excel, takes 10 seconds to setup, and you get automatic sorting and filtering, with near-zero effort.

I also find excel easier to use than libreoffice calc as I’m more experienced with excel. This example though is easily solved by using Autostyle + Autoformat
