1. Israel primarily needs bombs, and lots of them. No other country could provide Israel with bombs and planes on the scale that the US currently supplies them. A US arms embargo would force Israel to use up its current stockpiles, and could seriously affect their war effort.

2. Israel has initiated all of the recent military strikes in Iran, Syria, and Lebanon and despite this, none of Israel’s neighbors, not even Iran, want escalation to a full scale conflict. The idea that they would all suddenly attack Israel following a US arms embargo is sheer fantasy.

3. The US State department is imposing restrictions on Israel’s use of US weaponry? Uh, since when? They are not currently imposing any restrictions, even though they should be under the Leahy Laws, so imposing an embargo would not change Israel’s behavior in this regard whatsoever. All this talk of being “in compliance with international humanitarian law” when it comes to Israel is a total PR farce.

The post title seems to be satirizing a common argument between factions on the left / centre-left. It can generally apply to various issues (say, universal health care or police reform) but US support for Israel is the current point of contention.

One side is advocating just to make sure Kamala gets the presidency and Trump is defeated, after which point (they say) she can be pressured to ‘move left’ on the subject of Israel, which would mean to enforce an arms embargo on Netanyahu in order to put a halt to the killing in Gaza.

The other side (which is the position being advocated by this meme) are saying no, it doesn’t work like that with Democrats – they profess to be in favor of change and progressive values but once in power, they’ll be under the boot of big money donors and lobbyists in Washington. If you want to pressure on Kamala on Israel (they say) the time to do it is now, while she’s desperate to get elected.

The idea that propaganda cannot be propaganda if it is delivered in a dry, objective tone is nonsensical.

The Israel/Palestine conflict is a great example of this - especially in the US. Anyone who has closely watched the mainstream news media cover the situation in Gaza, or the college protests that sprung up as a result, has witnessed consent for Israel’s war being manufactured in front of their very eyes, along with the vilification of anyone who stands opposed to it. The fact that it is delivered by seemingly professional journalists in a somber, even tone has no bearing whatsoever on how accurately it describes reality.

I disagree – I think there is definitely room for this more impassioned/personal style of reporting as long as the facts being reported are accurate, especially with this conflict in particular. After all, the headline is not misleading – people literally attacked military bases in defense of the right of IDF soldiers to rape and torture Palestinian detainees with impunity. That happened.

If you prefer the more dispassionate, passive-voice-using, equivocating language about what is going on in Israel/Palestine right now, you have almost the entire rest of the Western news media to choose from.

Yes, but the point is we are now in 2024. All those other presidents are either dead or retired.

Both are older than the state of Israel, FFS.

Oh, don’t get me wrong - Budweiser/Coors/Michelob etc. are all awful. However, most US states have good local breweries and craft beers. Lagers are generally not as popular as IPAs, but you can still get good ones. Admittedly, this varies quite a bit depending on where you are in the US.

As a cooking ingredient, maybe, but if you’re using butter on toast, bread, etc. then Irish/French/British butter is clearly better.

The two party system really is a horrible idea. It’s pretty telling that no country that has adopted a liberal democratic system of government since the founding of the US has chosen to follow suit.

Nobara may well use a non-stock configuration, but by default a three-finger swipe left or right on the trackpad will switch between workspaces. As for keyboard shortcuts, I believe they are disabled by default but you can always set your own by going to settings > keyboard shortcuts > navigation > switch to workspace on the left/right.

I see what you’re getting at, but that’s a flawed analogy.

Firstly, public roads are paid for collectively through taxes but everyone can benefit from them, not just large multinational corporations. That’s not currently how user data is used in the context we are discussing, since the users themselves do not benefit materially from the data they produce.

A more accurate use of a road analogy would be to say that, at the moment, the users build the roads themselves (generate their data), and the private companies say to the users “Thanks very much for building the roads, we’re now going to charge anyone who wants to use them and keep 100%. Oh, and you have no ownership rights, so we can restrict access to these roads as we see fit.”
