  • This whole thing has me thinking about the gun control episode of Bojack a lot.

The moment rich white guys felt threatened (by women in that case) guns were completely outlawed, and I think this is the closest we’ll ever get to that in real life. If a few more CEOs are knocked off I could see it being discussed. If 10 or 20 more are killed I think we would actually see severe restrictions put in place.

  • There are definitely people who can’t handle it. It makes sense in a way; pretty much everybody will lose it once they start starving, so there’s definitely a line. Some people just have that line much closer. It seems like a physical tolerance, not really a psychological or character trait.

My spouse is like that and can’t go more than 6 hours or so without food. I’m the opposite and can easily go more than a day without before getting cranky, but I assume that’s from a lot of practice as a kid.

  • There are already a few notifications, banners, and pop-ups while presenting in Teams. If you’re really lucky the presenter could instinctively click “Accept” without reading it, but it seems more likely they’d notice and verbally ask what you want it for.

  • Absolutely. My spouse looks at me like I’m crazy for putting black blankets on the floor in front of all the south-facing windows, but it’s a noticeable difference in those rooms. I also keep the leftover pasta and kettle water out until it’s cooled down instead of dumping hot water down the drain. Helps to avoid running the humidifier too.

  • Every time people ask me where the architecture is heading I think, “How should I know? I just graduated; someone above me will figure that out.” Then I realize it’s been almost 20 years and I am actually expected to know how databases work and I am one of the most senior in the department. I feel like this goose a lot.

  • I know a couple people like that. Once you know it’s better to stop wasting your breath. Just respond with, “Not much,” and physically move on. Definitely don’t say, “Not much. You?” because then you’re forced to sit through whatever they wanted to talk about when they asked. Better to cut it short and talk to people you share interests with or who at least know how to have a conversation.

  • I’d believe it’s real. In 2016 I was at a company trying to migrate off an old IBM mainframe and green screens. It wasn’t like an airline with complex or critical code; it was just a barely functional ERP for a warehouse. Source control was the furthest thing from their minds. Some companies and IT departments are very reluctant to change, regardless of how much time and money it save.
