  • It started with a bunch of kids getting lead poisoning from applesauce pouches. They then traced that back to how most spices are sourced from poor countries using basically slave labor. So, these people are both not the most careful in preventing contamination, but those paid by weight of spices are almost incentivised to cut the spice with a heavy metal or something to get more $/per lbs. for example.

Edit A good amount of chocolate and other delicious things, in the US at least, also have a “totally safe” amount of heavy metals.

  • Much easier to grift off FUD than hope, and for many that income stream and power are near impossible to walk away from. If they tell themselves a lie enough they begin to believe it almost as much as their base does, and it’s easy to get caught up in and go down the rabbit hole and end up outside of reality.

It’s also easier to rationalize being the victim of “them” than it is coming to terms with being out of touch.

  • I think instead of being hostile to people coming to the US for a better life, perhaps we could create faster pathways to citizenship. Allow them to work and pay taxes while processing, and allow them to have that better life, and to be invested in making the US a better place.

And nobody is saying just allow anyone in, we could still screen people (like we already do), but we could also treat them like people. This whole thing of making these people the enemy is FUD in order to allow the Right to control its base, and the Left now feels they need to do “border-Nazi-lite” because the Right has controlled the narrative on this for so long.

  • Of course Reagan meant [white] immigrants.

It’s ridiculous how far right the USA has moved when it comes to immigration.

Agreed, and I think maybe we should remove the plaque from the Statue of Liberty as it clearly no longer applies.

“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

  • I noticed this myself as a teenager, with of all things, the popularity of Jeff Foxworthy and his whole “redneck” shtick. He glorified idiocracy and people reveled in being uneducated and just ignorant of everything. They would proudly wear shirts (or other merch) proclaiming it.

And I know it’s not the thing that turned the US towards anti-intellectualism, but it’s a time that sticks out to me still as something I can look back at as a visible manifestation of that shift.

  • Yes same base, but seen and used by different populations was my point. Rich bros aren’t sitting around hitting a crack pipe, they are doing a line off some exploited woman in their orbit (or apparently like Jr just out of the old pocket). And yes the CIA have used drugs as a currency once they realized they could make both illegal for poors and at the same time flood neighborhoods with it. Believe Bush Sr. was into this amongst other “covert” operations.

  • Coke is not crack, seems like semantics, but the Rich do not see them the same. It wasn’t a war on drugs to stop cocaine pouring into the US being used by white communities, it was to stop crack being used by poorer people of color. If drugs had stayed expensive and exclusive to white folks Regain wouldn’t have felt as strongly for sure.

The same thing with unemployment/social security being a great thing when white people had it to protect their “hard work”, but when people of color got to use the same system it turned into “welfare queens” based on a the story of a single black woman that abused the system.

  • I think a great deal of the issue on the “left” is that being such a large coalition, with takes all over the place on many topics, is that we have a very hard time getting everyone to fall lockstep behind many things.

The right has no real platform, and thus can just use their wide propaganda network to just spread their new deflection of the day 24/7, and everyone in that network of lies does their part without question.

I watched a good video last night talking about how we need to build a network like the right has to spread the lefts talking points, our victories, and our goals. Because the current media landscape constantly bends themselves in knots to not offend the right instead of calling out their lies and bullshit for what it is. We need to stop giving the disinformation a platform outside of the Rights network.

  • But blaming the party and sitting out, or voting 3rd party, everyone knew would lead to Trump winning, just like it did. Not voting for Harris was a vote for Trump, and makes those people just as complicity in his being elected as the people that voted for him. Trying to rationalize it as “Dems need to run a better candidate/campaign/etc” is just cover for not wanting to take responsibility for allowing the man everyone left of the GOP knew was a bad idea, back into power (and with numbers that are going to feed his ego into fascist wet dreams).

Moral of my rant is this - criticism of the party is fine and should be allowed/encouraged, but trying to blame the party for millions of people handing Trump the presidency is a bad faith argument and should be called out as such each and every time. We are all adults, everyone knew the consequences, and we all made a choice. And people need to start owning that instead of blaming the DNC for not being their unicorn party able to 100% represent a **WAY ** more diverse set of ideals than Trumps singular ideology of hate/fear.

  • We need to do what Harris had stated, and go after all these companies price gouging like we are still in the middle of the COVID pandemic. And that is now only going to get worse with a con man in office set on making himself, his companies, and his friends (which is anyone that says nice things to him) as rich as possible by extracting what remains of the working class. They are going to weaken/dismantle unions, and likely start mass death/slave labor camps for the poor.

He is also going to use his new position of power to pass laws to shield crypto scammers, and use his new crypto platform to undermine the US dollar and try and force more people to his crypto grift run by some of the worse humans around. And use his NFT/crypto stuff to openly except bribes to sell off the US to the highest bidder so when his dementia gets bad enough they put JD in charge he can live out the rest of his days being fed liquid cheese burgers on a golden spoon.

  • You are never going to have a perfect candidate on every issue to represent everyone left of fascism in the US. And this line of “run a better candidate” just means you never actually cared in the first place. Enjoy the fascism from your high horse.

Just gutted by the amount of people that would rather watch the world burn than have to vote for someone that didn’t match their 1 issue 100%, and knowing the alternative was 100% worse on all options.
