  • Ireland has peacekeepers between Israel and Lebanon right now. They wouldn’t be there if “create peace” was one of the missions.

Peace must exist, however briefly, and then the peacekeepers place themselves in harm’s way to keep the peace.

Extend the mission to militarily “create peace” and suddenly you are just NATO/USA. How can either side trust a peace that was enforced upon them and not call it a defeat, whose borders are disputed for eternity? Every nationalist who wants to stir sentiment can just say “look what the British/Americans/UN imposed on us”. Outside forces drawing borders is pretty much the cause of 90% of warfare, civil and otherwise, for the last 80 years.

  • I’m using the plural. Kathoey is both singular and plural in Thai. I would hope you’d also pick that up from “women”.

I’m also being careful not to equate 1-1 the kathoey identity with the transwoman identity. They aren’t the same, though the global conversation I am sure will eventually bring them closer.

  • Kathoey are definitely not androgynous. They are explicitly living as women would, and present very feminine as shown. To varying degrees of success in passing, but it isn’t an issue. Nobody tells them they can’t be kathoey. They just are.

There is a lesser known opposite, Tom. As in, Tomboy. These are afab who essentially live as men. Less so than kathoey, I will say, presumably because society isn’t as ready for afab to play male roles. But they will wear short hair, dress masculine, and usually have relationships with with cis-women, known as "Dee (for “good (girl)” 🫤). When was there more than a decade ago at the start of social media really taking off, there was a high-society generational trend of cis-girls dating tomboys in their late teens, as a way to be safe from pregnancy/abuse while still being the cool girl who dates on Insta. You imagine this to be pretty sad at times for Toms who get abandoned as soon as said ciswomen are more stable in life.

  • It’s probably just too broad to treat as one war, but I always return to reading the fall of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Empire. So many poetic, cinematic moments that for western civilisation defined our subsequent history. Where are we if Crassus doesn’t desperately need a triumph but gets fed molten gold instead? If Marc Anthony and Cleopatra rule the Mediterranean from Alexandria? If a comet doesn’t convince half of Rome that Caesar is a literal God?

  • This is, of course, Ameri-centric horseshit. American voting is reported on as white, black, Latino and not-statisitcally-significant. Meanwhile they’ll call other countries “ethnically homogenous” mostly because they don’t know anything about any other countries or literally thousands of years of finding any reason to hate each other. Motherfucker I don’t care if we’re genetically identical I’ll be dead and buried before I vote for a fucking Walloon/Protestant/Catholic/Silesian/Scouser/Galician/Lombard/Frisian (delete as appropriate). They haven’t at any point all been thrown into a cage, deprived of their heritage and told “nah you’re just black/mexican now”. And it ignores that yes, global migration is global. Every colonial state has left people behind in its former colonies, and found themselves with former subjects as citizens too.

  • Yes absolutely they can

You know the purpose of this is so they can use them without being tracked though, right? If it’s easy to exclude outliers and bad data, it makes this suggestion pretty useless.

As people have suggested, there’s almost no reason to ever have this data leave your own personal device or network. Women have tracked their periods for thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of years.
