  • Not just Philippines. Vietnam is being pushed out of the region.

See, the sea (pun intended) has always been fished by amongst many nationalities for thousands of years with absolutely no fighting whatsoever. Filipino fishermen themselves mentioned they even share some of their catch to Vietnamese and Chinese fishermen; until the Chinese government just laid claim to South China Sea unilaterally.

There was no problem at all to begin with. It is only the government attempting to brainwash their citizens to hate on other people.

  • I got accused of ageism before for saying the same that there should be mandatory retirement for public officials. However, the most convincing argument I heard for letting elders to still run for public office is that their accumulated experience, knowledge and wisdom could still be of great dispense for the public. Noam Chomsky is still doing well despite in his 90’s, for example.

But Chomsky did not get it right with his genocide denialism on Cambodia and Yugoslavia. He may have great insights, but his ego seems to have been entrenched on downplaying atrocities of other anti-Western countries simply because they are anti-America. And then there is also the time when Chomsky basically brushed aside his association with Jeffrey Epstein, by telling the interviewer to mind his business. It’s not a proof in and of itself, but it’s very suspicious.

To be honest, I think a lot of Lemmy users are old and yearn for the older technologies simply because they have been more familiar with them than newer ones. They would have used the first gen of a technology, which may not be efficient, and dismiss it altogether, without realising that subsequent generations of that technology improves over time.

I have had that realisation of cognitive bias when I had Bluetooth headphones back in early 2010s. The wireless connection isn’t great and gets cut off every now and then. I dismissed the technology as less efficient than wired earphones. It was over the years with the popularity of airpods that I gave wireless earphones another chance. And honestly, the Bluetooth connectivity vastly improved than I expected and I would not go back to using wired earphones again on regular basis because I don’t have to deal with the wires getting tangled or yanked. I only use wired ones as backup if my wireless earphones went missing or broke.

Sorry to say this to OP, but it seems that you’re being an old man yelling at the clouds. Look, I’m also old and I admit I have had that moment of yelling at the clouds too. We will have that more moments as we age.

  • Yup. The real disinfo campaign is these people repeating the same Kremlin non-sense drivel.

“Ukraine is corrupt. Ukraine is conscripting people. Ukraine just suspended the presidential election.”

First, any corruption accusation can be leveled to absolutely any other country you can think of. So what? Is that an excuse to invade another country? And what do they expect from a country invaded unprovoked and at war? Not to mobilise? Suspension of elections while at war is nothing new. Except for the US, Allied nations in World War 2 didn’t hold elections until full victory was achieved because elections during an active conflict will disrupt policy-making. What Ukraine had done suspending elections is normal for any country engaged in a total war.

  • Predictably, people are arguing if violence can be an answer. But the best rule of thumb is “speak softly, but carry a big stick”. If peaceful demonstration and diplomacy ran its course, then violence is the only path forward. I mean, the abolition of slavery in the United States could never be done by peaceful means (unlike what UK had done) so war was the only way.

  • Usual Kremlin drivel. Somehow being a corrupt country makes it excusable to be invaded.

Ukraine is at war, any country at war would have censorship. The Allies in World War 2 also enforced censorship but are you going to say they deserve to fight the Nazis? Russia also has censorship even before the war, and now arrests anti-war Russians.

Why is it that those who bring up Ukraine’s “corruption and censorship”, never mentions Russia’s own corruption and censorship? As if being corrupt warrants being invaded. You are doing exactly what this meme pokes fun at: victim blaming. Accuse the enemy of which you are guilty of, am I right?

Ukraine did not “ban” a religion, they banned the Moscow-affiliated Russian Eastern Orthodox church for being openly pro-Putin. Ukrainians and Russians share the same religion: Eastern Orthodox. But the religion is more decentralised and many groups have their own country jurisdictions. Ever since the fall of Byzantine, the Eastern Orthodox set up shop in Russia and in surrounding areas. And ever since then the Russian Eastern Orthodox had been kissing ass of whoever is in charge in Kremlin. As someone mentioned, a priest on the Russian side even blessed nuclear weapons.

If you are not a tankie, you are certainly being manipulated to become a useful idiot. Always view things with a critical eye.
