  • What people misunderstand about the tax brackets is that your entire income doesn’t get moved to a higher bracket. It’s only the income in excess of it.

So for example, let’s say you had $50,000 of taxable income in 2024 as a single filer, you’d pay 10% on that first $11,600 and 12% on the chunk of income between $11,601 and $47,150. Then you’d pay 22% on the remaining $2,850 that falls into the next tax bracket. The total bill would be about $6,053 — about 12% of your taxable income — even though your highest bracket is 22%. And this example doesn’t take into account the standard deduction.

Bottom line, this won’t save people as much as they think it will. Usually the person in the example simply complains “I’m paying 22%” because it always feels like the paycheck isn’t enough.

  • There’s a bit of a sugar replacement movement, which isn’t necessarily healthier. Most of the sugar replacements have been linked with stuff like dementia if consumed regularly for a long period. And most of them taste a bit off. The other part of the problem is that when you eat something sweet, your body expects sugar. When it doesn’t get the sugar it’s expecting, it will feel like you are still hungry even though you just ate something.

  • Ok doc, what do you suggest? I’m 40 and somehow my 80 year old mother has better mobility than I do. I can’t even tell you why I have pain, there is no injury. Doctors can’t tell me why. I’ve tried everything short of opioids and back surgery, and I know those aren’t going to help either. What the hell do you do when your body just doesn’t react normally to exercise, stretching, physical therapy, etc?? It’s not that I want to accept that this is my life now, but there don’t seem to be any other options. Just be glad this isn’t happening to you, I guess.

  • Well, it had a bunch of the answers I’d been looking for all my life, since therapists won’t ever just come out and tell you any of that.

Do you think all of psychology is pseudoscience, or just the stuff that hasn’t made it into the DSM yet? Who are you to say that a therapist with years of research experience doesn’t know what they’re talking about?

  • If I got an invite like this and I knew that many people were invited, I may have assumed that most of the others would show up, and therefore you may not even notice whether I showed up or not. Like, inviting 50 people is already kind of impersonal, isn’t it? Would you really have the time to interact with all 50 if they had all showed?

And really, who cares if you don’t have 50 friends? I don’t. Most people I know don’t. They might have 50 acquaintances, but keeping up that many friendships would be exhausting.

  • I’d like to see a more recent one, since it seems the pandemic spurred a lot of the price gouging. Our minimum wage has gone up $3 since 2019.

Also, since there’s not a huge difference in Big Mac prices between states, I’m wondering if national chains are using the min wage increase in a few states to increase prices across the board, rather than just increasing prices in the states with high minimums.
