  • The last apartment I had, the landlord at some point had put very rough outdoor quartz tiles in the kitchen. They were porous and had crevices everywhere so were impossible to keep clean. Our routine became vacuuming for regular cleaning, mopping any sticky spots when needed, and getting on our hands and knees once a year to scrub the tile with soap and brushes. It was the only way to actually clean the tile and the tile would change colors every time we did it. Did I mention that this tile has been installed over 3 more layers of flooring? Classic landlord special apartment.



  • I feel you. I weirdly did have vegetables and things growing up, but my mom self admittedly hates cooking. So most of what we ate consisted of casseroles made up of things dumped out of a can and any veggies likely also came from a can and we’re heated up on the stove. She also over cooked all the meat to make sure people wouldn’t get sick. So all the veggies were bland and mushy and all the meat was dry as fuck. I’ll never forget the first time I ate fresh pineapple at my inlaws house and it was one of the best things I ever tasted. I’m pretty good at cooking now and I’ve managed to help my mom improve in all ways as well. She now uses a meat thermometer that I got her for Christmas. I cooked her some fresh broccoli in a pan with salt, pepper, and garlic powder and she loved it and started making hers that way instead of boiling it. Baby steps, but we’re making progress.



  • For me, someone who uses a Mac for work but still has to use the office environment, it goes something like this:

    Google the issue

    Google the issue + office for Mac

    Find a forum about the exact issue I’m having

    Loads of people commenting having the same issue

    Expert answers and says “That feature is not available for Macs at this time. How about you post it as a suggestion for the devs at this link here>>>”

    Post is minimum 3 years old and there’s still no solution.

    Gee thanks.









  • You have to be more specific with kids sometimes. Remember that they’re having to learn all the basic things about language we already know. I remember when my little brother was a toddler and he was playing with the flippy lid on my uncle’s garbage can. My uncle yelled “Steven! Get your butt outta my garbage can!” My brother looked at him confused and looked back at the can and started flipping it again. My uncle yelled at him again with the same response and then asked my mom why he won’t listen. My mom then said “Steven, take your hands out of the garbage can.” And he immediately understood what that meant and stopped doing it.

    I decided during COVID to try to work on my health in whatever way I could get to stick. And I think flossing was my most successful endeavor. I did 2 things that really helped me ease into the habit: 1) I bought a water pik 2) I thought about what it is that keeps me from flossing and I let those things go. So I started off just using the water pik. I did that for about a year and sometimes I would forget, but I’d just hop back on it next time. Just doing this alone helped me to physically feel the difference in my mouth and after a bit, I didn’t like how it felt if I forgot. After about a year I started using floss and this brings me to the things I needed to let go. I needed to learn how to use floss properly, but growing up poor, I would often get in trouble for using too much of something including floss. But some of my teeth are tight and I need a longer piece to get enough leverage. I also don’t like being wasteful and didn’t like using longer pieces especially since it’s plastic waste. I decided to let all of those things go and just use big ass pieces of floss so I could learn how to do it properly. This helped a ton and over time as I got better, I used the water pik less and less and now primarily use floss every night. And now that I’ve learned how, I can use smaller pieces and also have switched to a more environmentally friendly floss. I would say this process took me about 2 years, but I don’t have issues at the dentist anymore like bleeding gums or metal tools jabbing at me. It’s made a big difference and helped me to look at other problems in a similar light: what’s stopping me from doing this and how can I remove those barriers?


  • While that is true, there are 2 things to unpack here: 1. Typically housing is zoned in different locations to businesses so this has no correlation. 2. This map is so big that none of those stores are actually in Chicago. They are all in the suburbs and it would literally take you 1.5 - 3 hours to get from the southern most one to the northern most one. They’re all a lot farther apart than you may realize.
