  • I’ve been wondering the same thing. Is it something to do with our lifespan, cognitive biases, political arrangements or what? We can read about things that happened in living memory and still make the same mistakes. Seems like some things change rapidly, e.g. computers, and some things change on a glacial timescale e.g. religion.

  • Started with caffeine as a child and never really stopped. School was a problem and I sought solace in cannabis as a teen. Eventually cannabis became toxic to my mental health and I quit it in my twenties, and alcohol somewhat filled the void. A ten year hiatus from all substances ensued but I hated my job and went back to education to retrain and this is where I really got into it with drugs.

Motivating long and boring tasks is ADHD kryptonite, as I’m sure many here are familiar. This particular motivational mountain was a PhD thesis and my weapons of choice were opioids, cocaine, amphetamine and benzodiazepines. Opioids are great for motivation, stimulants sharpen the concentration and benzos let me sleep. I was unaware of ADHD at this time but I knew something was wrong and that this cocktail was completely unsustainable.

Fast forward three years and I finally learn why I seek these things, it’s ADHD, duh. Now I have the correct medication and therapy I never think about drugs. I’m happy and productive, I can work on undoing forty years of pretending to be someone without an attention deficit.

  • Hitler also carried out everything he campaigned on. It’s the appeal of a populist strongman, they actually do what they say they’re gonna do.

The problematic part was all the extra stuff he didn’t mention. When he said he would deal with the Jewish problem few people understood how far he would go. He was also beholden to big business despite his apparently socialist posturing.

  • Bear in mind it’s sometimes difficult to know how we feel. 30mg is a good starter dose but most people take more than that. I settled on 40mg but 50 is also okay. I decided to take the lowest dose that would alleviate the symptoms and avoid most of the side effects. There are many different drugs - methylphenidate, amphetamine, methamphetamine, dexamphetamine, dextroamphetamine, etc. Give yourself time to get used to lisdexamfetamine but try something else if it’s not effective.

  • Very interesting and I would not have expected that outcome. In some ways the actions of avowed racists is easier to deal with. If our cards are on the table we can at least have a discussion. The racism that dwells in people and institutions who never admit it is incredibly corrosive.

Reading historical texts about eras where the concept of race didn’t exist as we know it today is refreshing. I suppose they had other problems but the modern conception of race feels like a political tool and completely artificial. So too with gender, it’s encouraging to see kids abandoning those outdated notions.

  • Is it a good question though? Even if we set aside the fact that it’s a loaded question, what are we going to do with the information?

It has a similar character to the question ‘what is a race?’. Information that people look a certain way is not particularly useful, on the other hand we feel it viscerally. If we don’t stop to think we end up making unhelpful judgements.

Race, gender, nation states, money, the past and future, these are just concepts and if we confine ourselves to the domain of concepts we run the risk of mistaking them for our actual experience, out in the world. We stop listening and start assuming that our internal narrative is infallible, because it is.

Okay so you don’t trust the robot to give relationship advice, even if that advice is identical to what humans say. The trouble is we never really know where ideas come from. They percolate up into consciousness, unbidden. Did I speak to a robot earlier? Are you speaking to a robot right now? Who knows. All I know is that when someone I love and respect asks me to explain myself I feel that I should do that no matter what.

Like her need for him to answer reasonable questions? Why does the origin of the question pose a threat and why doesn’t he give examples? He’s like the rando poster who says ‘hey guys I forgot the passcode to my iPhone, got a workaround for that?’ okay buddy, so you stole a phone then.
