In their effort to “exert total control” over religion and to “sinicise”
Catholic and Protestant Christianity, the authorities have “ordered the removal
of crosses from churches [and] replaced images of Jesus Christ or the Virgin
Mary with pictures of President Xi Jinping,” the report said. The report
concluded that “every facet of religious life for Buddhists, Catholics and
Protestant Christians, Muslims, and Taoists” was facing pressure to incorporate
CCP ideology, and religious elements considered contradictory to the state’s
political agenda were being eradicated.
thanks, I didn’t run into a paywall on the article but good to have backups.
That’s funny. The first time I opened the link I got a cutoff version of the article and it told me to make an account (which I then tried to remove with an ad blocker and the thing was called a paywal internally but the article stayed cut off), Now the second time, the message is gone.
So yeah, that may be just a random message shown on occasion.
